Telling pupils what to do, where they are going wrong, or punishing poor behaviour has little or no effect on learning. However if what you say is more positive and does not directly judge then it can have a very transformational effect.

Saying don’t do that or that is certainly not your best work is negative and can easily turn into a positive, how is that helping you move forward? Or what can you do to improve wat you have already started? Are saying the same thing but in a much more positive way.

Ultimately, we are all in the classroom to move the learning forward so learning a few new skills designed to do just that is very beneficial
