Listening is renowned for being a skill that we are not very good at. So think carefully about how you approach a conversation with a colleague, a pupil or someone else you know. Are you ready to listen or do you readily interrupt and take over the conversation if you have the chance to do so? Are you easily distracted by mind chatter inside you own head?

Think carefully about the barriers to listening actively, time can be a factor as can noise and other distractions.

Make sure that when you listen you are taking in what is being said and that you do not have preconceived ideas about what you think you should be hearing.

Be frank in your discussions and while you are listening and talking take not of how well you are listening and how well others are listening to you.
