Here are some of the active listening skills that you need to develop as a coach.
Listening is vital if you are to reflect back on what has been said.
Engendering trust comes when the coach can paraphrase exactly what has been said.
He or she needs to be able to summarise in order to draw out a point or suggest next steps.
The coach needs to have presence, to be there and to focus on the issues that are pertinent to the person they are coaching.
The coach needs to be aware of the power of non-verbal signals both that he or she displays and those that others display.
Learning how to close or finish a conversation is also a skill a coach needs to have.
