A live face to face webinar and a CPD box set of essential resources, materials and research linked to strengthening the expertise of teachers in the primary and early secondary phase who do not have first-hand expertise and qualifications in design technology or who do but would like a refresher.

Design technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. In this course we focus on how design technology can inspire innovation and imagination, provide pupils with opportunities to solve real and relevant problems and consider their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We look at the vocabulary, concepts, themes and skills that will create a rich curriculum offer and that will support curriculum leaders and teachers of design technology to help pupils learn how high-quality design makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.

We look at the study of design technology through the application of curriculum standards and other important research to unpick the key concepts, themes, processes and skills that design technology leaders and teachers must use to create a sequential and substantive curriculum. Teachers and leaders of design technology need to deliver the practical skills, high-quality pedagogy and learning in design technology lessons outlined in the statutory guidance and provide opportunities outside the school and the classroom to appreciate and learn more about the importance of design technology now and in the past.

Defining a sequence of learning in design technology from early years, into the primary phases and then seamlessly into key stage 3 and beyond
Building a vocabulary ladder for learning linking generic and conceptual language
Focusing on the links that exist to English and maths and other foundation subjects
A lens onto pedagogy and active learning leading to the acquisition of deep knowledge, conceptual understanding and skills competence
