Approaches to Instructional Coaching Personalising CPD for teachers 10th October 2023 London

This course is for all those with a pupil facing role in the classroom and who want the opportunity to enhance their potential through learning how to coach

How will this course benefit you?

Instructional coaching is gaining in popularity and is increasingly being used as a personalised and sustainable approach to developing teaching and learning within schools’ CPD programmes.

Understanding the value of using coaching to support teachers, tailored to their individual needs at any stage in their career, will empower them to solve their own problems, be confident enough to innovate and learn through independent enquiry, reflect in partnership with peers and engage in deep professional learning conversations which help develop and sustain highly effective teaching and learning in the classroom.

Using instructional coaching to enhance teacher reflection and development can enhance a culture of professional learning and collaboration and contribute to positive, evidence-based approaches to lesson observation and appraisal

What will be covered in this course?

  • Define the principles of coaching and how it differs from other types of teacher support and development
  • Reflect on the skills and qualities involved in coaching and how these underpin working in partnership with colleagues in school
  • Explore the principles of instructional coaching and the different approaches involved
  • Consider the implementation of instructional coaching using the impact cycle and engaging in deliberate practice
  • Develop a shared understanding of what highly effective teaching and learning looks like in your setting
  • Review a range of tools, techniques and teaching and learning resources to support the process.
  • Consider ways in which you might implement approaches discussed and develop a culture of coaching in your own setting as a result of your learning on the course

Who is this course for?

  • Subject and curriculum leaders– those with the responsibility for supporting the staff development of experienced new and recently qualified staff and also with responsibility for performance management and professional development
  • Heads of Teaching and Learning – The resources, materials and messages that are part of this course will give those with a collective responsibility for teaching and learning with a wealth of materials and resources to support professional development for many with a pupil facing role
  • Experienced Teachers – This course will benefit those teachers who can work with their colleagues as a coach where they are specifically working with less experienced colleagues to support them to incrementally develop their pedagogy and reflect with their coach on the impact their teaching has on learning

Creating CPD that is sustainable and cost effective

We design all our courses so that you can take your learning back to share with your colleagues. The materials, resources and activities are available electronically for you to download and use again.

We know that where delegates can share and cascade their learning with their colleagues they consolidate their learning and others benefit from that learning. In this way the professional development has a far greater impact on individual, team and whole school improvement.
